eDOCSNL is the provincial electronic medical record (EMR) program for physicians and other health care providers jointly governed by the Department of Health and Community Services, the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association, the Regional Health Authorities and the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Health Information to deliver and manage EMR implementation and use in the province.

The Province contracts with Telus Health to provide an EMR solution (Med Access), a computer-based patient medical record designed for physicians and other providers’ practices. The EMR provides patient record management including access to patient information previously stored and recorded in paper files or another EMR, practice management, billing and scheduling functions. The value of joining eDOCSNL for health providers, over contracting with an EMR vendor independently, is the integration with other provincial information systems for health information such as demographics, medical and drug history, laboratory results and diagnostic imaging. It also includes a direct link from the patient record to MCP to assist with physician billing and HEALTHe NL.

eDOCSNL assists physicians and their staff prepare for the installation of the EMR solution, provides support and educational activities to support mature use of the EMR and manages the relationship with Telus.

The goal is to ensure that eDOCSNL is a sustainable provincial program that supports best practice and leverages the intelligent features of the EMR to help providers manage their clinics and care for their patients.
